Secondary Teacher Education Preparation
thru
Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics
LSU faculty in math, science, and
education have collaborated in devising an undergraduate degree in math or
science with a concentration in secondary education. This is a degree that gives you the
option of graduate school in your field, or professional employment including
teaching as a middle or high school highly qualified, certified teacher.
Here are some of the benefits of the
program:
·
Participants
will fulfill all the requirements of a math, chemistry, physics, or biology
major and become a certified teacher. That means they will still have their
math or science degrees, and also have certification to teach high school math
or science (discipline specific). In other words the degree will still state:
Bachelor of Science in Biology (or Math, or Chemistry, or Physics).
·
This
program will still allow participants to graduate in four years. It’s only a
128 hour program. The credit hours already earned are easily transferable.
·
The
program’s coursework will fully prepare participants to teach by including such
activities as one on one tutoring and small group tutoring under the mentorship
of outstanding k-12 teachers as well as LSU faculty.
·
Ten
$500 scholarships and six $7,500 available for juniors
beginning in spring 2004. Selected candidates will receive scholarships
for both their junior and senior years.
·
Participants
can start taking classes as early as their sophomore year with EDCI 2001
(avail. Fall 2003) which can also be used as general education social science
course fulfillment.
·
Participants
can enhance communication/human relation skills through education concentration
component.
Program Summary
· The Content Major with secondary education
concentration program (STEP thru STEM) aims to triple the number of LSU
students graduating with teacher certification in fields of science and
mathematics by the end of the decade.
·
This
program makes secondary education certification more attractive by allowing
students to earn degrees in academic fields while simultaneously earning
teacher certification.
Program’s Goal
·
The
goal of this program is to increase the number of highly qualified secondary
teachers in science and mathematics by presenting a dynamic curriculum
developed and enriched by an established community of scholars, including
secondary school teachers and LSU faculty in both Education and the subject
matter.
