The course work background recommended for incoming graduate students is essentially the minimum required for a B.S. or B.A. degree as certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS). These courses, with semester credit hours, are listed below:
General Chemistry and Elementary Quantitative Analysis (10-12 hrs)
Organic Chemistry (9-10 hrs)
Physical Chemistry (8-10 hrs)
Analytical Chemistry including Instrumental Analysis (3-6 hrs)
Inorganic Chemistry (2-3 hrs)
Two additional advanced one-semester Chemistry courses
One year of Calculus
One year of Physics (including Physics Lab)
Advanced courses in mathematics and physics are strongly recommended for those students planning to concentrate in the area of Physical Chemistry.
