DEPARTMENT NEWS

Dr. Isiah M. Warner was recently featured in an article about mentoring and assisting college students which was published in The Chronicle of Higher Education.    The article outlined his success and in particular addressed Dr. Warner's "mentoring ladder," in which graduate students mentor undergraduates, and undergraduates mentor high school students. 

In an additional note, Dr. Warner, was chosen to serve on the search committee that will help select the university's next chancellor.

Congratulations to summer graduates - Leslie Bishop, who received her Bachelor of  Science degree in Chemistry; and Constantina KapnissiMichelle Galloway and David Aubry  who received their Ph.D.'s  in Chemistry.

Commendations for Excellence in Teaching for Spring 2004

The College of Basic Sciences relies heavily on its faculty to carry out the teaching function of the College's mission. Teaching  is fundamental, and it is always a great pleasure to recognize superior performance in the classroom.   The following faculty are recognized  for receiving teaching evaluation scores above 9.5.  Scores above 9.5 are difficult to attain.  Congratulations on  excellent teaching as perceived by the students and indicated in these evaluations.  We are all proud of your accomplishments and wish you continued success in your instructional efforts.

Dr. Saundra Y. McGuire, has news from the Center for Academic Success.   They've been named outstanding learning center in the nation for 2004!

Dr. Isiah Warner was awarded  the University of Washington, College of Arts & Sciences, Distinguished Alumnus Award, May 20, 2004.

Dr. Julia Chan has been awarded a travel grant for emerging faculty (TGEF) through the NSF-ESPCoR program administered by the Board of Regents.

Congratulations to Caroline Owendi Ongayi.  Caroline, who's major professor is Dr. Maria da Graca H. Vicente,  has been awarded one of two  Coates Research Grants for 2004-2006.

Mariah McMasters from the McCarley group received an NSF Summer Fellowship through their Asia and Pacific Studies Institute Program.  She studied in Professor Yu-Tai Tao's group at Academica Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan during June-August of 2004.


Drs. Chen, Butler, and Hall part of $2.7M NSF NMI grant

National Science Foundation, "Collaborative Research: NMI DEPLOYMENT (CHE):  Computational Chemistry Grid (CCG): Production Cyberinfrastructure for Computational Chemistry", 5 universities/institutions are involved - Kentucky (PI), LSU, NCSA, UT-Austin, Ohio State.  CCT has been awarded a NSF NMI award for grid middleware, with a project called "GridChem: CyberInfrastructure for Computational Chemistry". The $2.7M three year project will be led by the University of Kentucky, and also involved the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Texas Advanced Center for Computing and Ohio State University. At LSU, which will receive $600K, the project involves Gabrielle Allen (PI) and Tom Goodale at CCT, Dana Browne in the Department of Physics, and Randall Hall, Les Butler, and Bin Chen in the Department of Chemistry.  For more information on this grant please click here.

 

National Center for Supercomputer Applications (NCSA), "Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Natural and Synthetic Beta-Sheet Polypeptides", 2004-2005, Randall Hall, 10,000 SU of computer time for project that involves James Rucker, Dana Browne, and Bob Hammer.

DEPARTMENTAL SEMINARS

Dr. Julia Chan presented a seminar on October 1, 2004 entitled "A Chemist's Perspective to Heavy Fermion Intermetallics: Interplay of Magnetism and Superconductivity."

Dr. Clifford Kubiak, from the University of California - San Diego will be presenting a seminar at 3:40 p.m. on October 22, 2004 in the Life Science Annex Auditorium.  Dr. Kubiak will be giving an inorganic talk.

 

Dr. Jason Ritchie from the University of Mississippi will be presenting a seminar at 3:40 p.m. on October 29, 2004 in the Life Science Annex Auditorium.  Dr. Ritchie will be giving an analytical talk.

RECENT TALKS

Sean P.  McGlynn participated in a series of informal lectures/colloquia on various aspects of electronic structure and spectroscopy at University College Cork, University College Galway and University College Dublin (all of which are constituent colleges of The National University of Ireland) during the period July 26th through August 4th, 2004 . The host in Cork was Paul Brint, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a former Postdoctoral Fellow in the Chemistry Department at LSU. The host in Dublin was Daniel Carroll, Professor of Chemical Engineering and also a former Postdoctoral Fellow in the Chemistry Department at LSU. The host in Galway was Professor Angela Savage. Angela does not claim the distinction of having held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at LSU. However, she has lectured at LSU.

Robin McCarley was recently invited to give a talk at the 4th International Dendrimer Symposium, to be held in May of next year. Organizers of the symposium are Professors Jean M. J. Frechet and Fraser Stoddard, and Dr. Donald Tomalia.

Employee Travel Reimbursement Requests

Please note the new rule from Travel/Accounting for anyone taking LSU guests or Seminar Speakers out for meals. You must have an itemized receipt for the LSU travel department to reimburse you for the cost of these meals. If you take them to Faculty Club you must request in itemized receipt for your meal. They will make you a copy of your itemized receipt for your meal purchase.

 

Purchasing Information 

When requesting information to purchase merchandise over $1000 by requisition please use these forms. These forms will eliminate any hassle you might be experiencing with vendors complying to LSU's regulations. Make copies and submit to vendor with a description of the items you are wanting to purchase. Once it is returned to you with this information, then you can bring it to either Melina or Genell and we will turn it in with a requisition to order for you. Let us know if you have any questions.

DMV Mobile Customer Service Center

The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles Mobile Customer Service Center will be visiting campus several times during the next two months.  Details on the two visits can be accessed by clicking the links below.  Complete information can be obtained by visiting the Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles Website.
