DEPARTMENT NEWS

Goodbye from Dr. Sibel Turksen

"Before leaving LA, I just wanted to thank you and say my goodbyes incase I won’t be able to see you. It was a great pleasure to have the chance to meet, work with and enjoy the friendship of each and every member of chemistry department. Being a foreigner makes you understand and appreciate the presence of good people around you. I've been at LSU long enough to have the privilege to work with most of the great professors and meet with the new faculty members. I was really lucky to have great friends and coworkers. Also, being located in the second floor made me appreciate the friendly smiles of the staff. I will really miss all the smiles and laughs I had with y’all."

News From SAACS

Fall semester events started off the semester with a Meet and Greet Lunch for faculty and undergraduate students.  Other events included departmental faculty as speakers and thanks to IGERT Dr. Jeffrey Youngblood from Purdue University as a guest speaker.

SAACS volunteered for this year's Super Science Saturday with Chem-Demos, and two members attended the conference INSPIREpmb "Spotlight on Excellence in Undergraduate Research" at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS.

For the future, SAACS is planning to give scholarship to SAACS members (officers are ineligible).  This is help encourage more students to actively participate in SAACS sponsored events and to also serve the community through with science.   Since this idea is in it's early stage, suggestions and critique of this activity is welcome.

SAACS will also be visiting underprivileged schools in the community to do some chem-demos, talk about science and give out goodies, etc.  They are looking for appropriate schools, localities around Baton Rouge.  If you have any ideas or opinions please let them know.  Field trips will also include trips to crime-labs, industries, etc. around Baton Rouge.

The 2005 ACS National Convention will be in San Diego and may of SAACS members will be presenting their undergraduate research.

Financial support is needed to help fund participation in the national convention, and to go on field trips.  If any faculty member has notes for their classes that SAACS can sell, they would be very thankful.  Any other means of support of SAACS is also most welcome.

SAACS also has undergraduate students looking for labs to be research in Chemistry.  If you have a place for an undergraduate student and would like to mentor one please let them know.
