Area of Interest

Solid State Chemistry and Inorganic Materials

Solid state and materials chemistry, electronic and magnetic intermetallics, borides, carbides and metal oxides are the major research areas that my group is studying. Of particular interest are crystal growth of materials that exhibit metal-to-insulator transitions, mixed valence, superconductivity, and magnetic frustration. Efforts are placed on the synthesis, structures, and properties of new materials in order to understand their crystal-chemistry.

Our interests are in structure/property relationships of single crystal intermetallics that exhibit exotic properties that arise from strong electron-electron correlations. These phases include intermetallic superconductors, heavy fermions, and new materials for energy applications.

Correlated Electronic Materials

Highly correlated electron systems are of considerable interest, particularly in the design, discovery and growth of novel bulk materials. One of the primary driving forces of basic research in the physics of new materials is the synthesis of these materials in single crystalline form. The study of the magnetic and transport behavior of single crystals allows for a fundamental correlation of the structures and physical properties of these materials. We also want to study the role of transition metals in heavy-electron systems along with the relationship of the magnetism to superconductivity in these materials.
