Welcome to chemistry from Professor Les Butler

Old stuff from Fall, 2005

GRADES UPDATED: Dec 16, 2005 @ 4PM

  • Primary web site: http://butler.chem.lsu.edu/1201
  • students: homework instructions
  • Final Exam information
    • Friday, Dec 16, 2005 at 7:30AM in 201 Williams (our section)
    • If you have a time conflict or 3 exams on the same day, then GET PERMISSION from the Dean of your college to take a makeup exam. Take the permission to Mrs. Linda Temple in Choppin 109 by 4PM Wednesday, Nov 23. Select one of these makeup times:
      • Tuesday, Dec 13 at 10AM
      • Thursday, Dec 15 at 10AM
Final exam: Forgot or used the wrong form number?
    1) Don't worry.
    2) The grade lookup site has the "Form Number" used to grade your exam. I graded all exams with both keys, and used the higher grade.
    3) Also, keep your copy of the final exam. Maybe the lower grade is the correct grade.

Final Exam: Friday, Dec 16, 7:30AM - 9:30AM, 201 Williams. KEY

Things to buy:

  • Textbook: "Chemistry: The Central Science", by Brown, LeMay, Bursten. 10-th edition. $120. Note: This is a new edition and there are no used versions available.
  • Homework access code: About 12-14 homework assignments will done through a web site. To logon to the web site, you will need the access code found in the back of the textbook. Wait until the first lecture for instructions on how to use the access code. Don't waste your code on an invalid login attempt!!!
  • Calculator:
    • Recommended are scientific calculators (both one and two line displays) with a typical cost of $10 to $40.
    • Allowed are simple four function calculators, provided you can do scientific exponents on the side.
    • Not allowed for examinations are cell phones, PDAs, and other devices with massive storage and/or communication capabilities.
  • Lecture notes:
    • It is strongly recommended that you bring hard copy of lectures to class. Annotate with your comments and fill-in-the-blanks from the lecture.
    • Option 1: Notes will be posted on this web site as pdf. You can download and print on your own printer.
    • Option 2: Complete lecture notes (242 pages) will also be sold by the student chemistry club (SAACS) for $20 during the first week, shrinkwrapped and punched for 3-ring binder. This option is probably cheaper and faster than printing the notes yourself and most students in past semesters have selected this option. The chemistry club will bring the notes to class and make the sales before lecture. All profits go to SAACS and finance things like student trips to chemistry meetings.
  • Optional: "Solutions to Red Exercises" by Dr. Roxy Wilson. Either 9-th or 10-th edition. New $47, used $35. Sold in the LSU bookstore in the Chem1202 section.
