LSU College of Basic Sciences Awards Professorships

The LSU College of Basic Sciences awarded distinguished professorships to eight of its faculty at an April 28th reception at the historic French House.  Included in the eight were Dr. Robert Strongin and Dr. Maria Da Graca Vicente from Chemistry shown above on the left with Dr. Charles H. Barre and Dr. Kevin Carman on the right.

New 700Mhz NMR Spectrometer Almost Ready

On March 22nd, The College of Basic Sciences took delivery of a new, 700Mhz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer. With a total purchase cost of 1.6 Million, it is the largest spectrometer of it's kind in the state.  Delivery of the spectrometer required extensive modifications the the building structure to accommodate the great size and weight of the magnet. Engineers and faculty members have worked diligently since it's arrival and hope to have it ready for use soon. The new spectrometer will be used heavily be research faculty and graduate students to study the 3 dimensional structure of biomolecules and other compounds in great detail.

Delivery of the NMR required the use of a crane   The 700Mhz cryomagnet sits on three vibration

and creation of a new opening in Choppin Hall      dampening legs in its new home in Choppin Hall

HONORS, AWARDS and PATENTS

The Council on Research has unanimously selected Dr. Brian Hales as the 2004 Distinguished Research Master of Engineering, Science and Technology.  Since 1972, the Council on Research has presented the Distinguished Research Master awards in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in research and scholarship at LSU. The recipients are chosen by the Council from nominees proposed from the University community. Nominations may be made for the DRM of Engineering, Science, and Technology, or the DRM of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The award provides an annualized prize of $1,500 as well as the University Medal.

Brian Hales, Distinguished Research Master
Engineering, Science & Technology

Professor Steven Watkins, has received the 2004 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. Dr. Watkins will receive a commemorative Presidential certificate at an awards ceremony to be held in the White House May 16-17th. There were only 8 recipients of this award in the entire country!

Dr. Jayne Garno and Dr. Evgueni Nesterov have been selected to receive a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award which provides seed money for research by junior faculty at Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) member institutions. These awards are intended to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty and result in new funding opportunities. Only one out of three applicants were selected, so congratulations to both of you!

Dr. Isiah Warner has been selected to receive the 2005 Charles E. Coates Award.  The presentation will take place on Thursday, May 12, 2005.

Dr. Warner has also been selected to receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Marquette University on May 22, 2005.

Dr. Robert Strongin has been selected to become the new Phillip W. and Foymae Kelso West Distinguished Professor in Chemistry. Dr. Strongin is a very deserving recipient of this distinction.

All professorships demand excellence in research but teaching and service also play a big part in the selection process, especially because we have so many faculty with impressive research credentials. The West professorship in particular has been associated with outstanding teaching.

Dr. Saundra McGuire  on April 20, 2005  received the Teaching in Higher Education (THE) Conference Outstanding Presentation Award, for the third consecutive year. The award was for a presentation entitled: Get the Millennial Learner to Focus on Learning Instead of Grades: It May Be Easier than You Think!

On March 23, 2005 she  received the Presidential Service Award from the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) for service in support of NOBCChE's mission.

Scholarship Awards

The local AAUW Scholarship awards were presented at the March 24th Campus Study Luncheon.  These awards, given to women doctoral candidates, are presented based upon merit.  This year's winners are Nadia J. Edwin and Mariah McMasters.  Ms. Edwin and Ms. McMasters are both in the Chemistry Department at LSU and are studying Alzheimer's disease.  Ms. Edwin is a native of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is also the mother of a young daughter.  Ms. McMasters received her undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas.  She is also active in volunteering her time in the local elementary schools to encourage students to become interested in the sciences.

PATENTS

Graduate Student Anne Sauer, along with Professors William Crowe, Gregg Henderson (Entomology) and Roger A Laine (Biological Sciences and Chemistry) submitted an LSU Patent on a new process for the synthesis of Nootkatone, the major flavor component of grapefruit oil, which was previously found to be a potent repellant and toxicant of Formosan Termites by Henderson's and Laine's research groups.

Leaving the University

Faculty, staff and student employees (especially graduating students) leaving the University are reminded to update their mailing addresses.  Home addresses can be updated in three ways:

1.    E-mail Payroll at payroll@lsu.edu

2.    Complete and submit to the Payroll Office a Change of Address form located at the following web address:                http://www.fas.lsu.edu/acctServices/pay/forms/as481.pdf

3.    Update address information via PAWS under Personal Preferences/Directory Information or by using the following link:  http://appl008.lsu.edu/pwsdefault.nsf/diruadr?openagent

International employees who need a social security number and would like a ride to the Social Security Office to apply may e-mail the International Cultural Center at ICC@lsu.edu to request transportation assistance.

For Reimbursement of Meals for any speakers, visitors, grad students, etc., you must provide itemized receipt in order to get reimbursed. If you should happen to have lunch at Chimes or the Faculty Club, you must ask for an itemized receipt. Accounting has advised us that they will no longer honor any receipt that is not itemized. This is a state law requirement.

We are anticipating a smooth fiscal year-end closing. One thing that will facilitate this is the purchase of direct charges using the LaCarte purchasing card. All direct charges are to be purchased with the LaCarte card beginning June 1, 2005 and it will be your responsibility to get receipts for your credit card purchases. If you have any questions concerning this, please feel free to contact Kelly Small at 578-3360 or Genell Bodoin at 578-3692.

To the faculty:  Please come by and introduce the new post docs, grad students or visiting professors to our office staff. We will be glad to help in getting an account established in our OOTS system and give them a brief training session on using the OOTS system.
